Samuel Achilefu a Professor of radiology and biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri has invented “goggles” that make “cancer cells” appear to glow under infrared light. Doctors at Washington University have used the goggles to operate on four patients with melanoma or breast cancer. (Doctors project the view from the goggles in “real time”). Once Dr. Achilefu’s “goggles” receive approval from the FDA doctors will test whether the technology reduces or elimates the need for follow-up surgeries. Achilefu’s team has received about $3 million from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
