FUTURISTIC FRIDAY: MOTHER ATHENA

May 30, 2008

                                                   The Exoskeleten Robotic Soldier

The Flying Man Suit

Software engineer Rex Jameson is pictured above wearing a “robotic soldier suit” that is an “exoskeleton” of aluminum and electronics that multiplies his strength and endurance as many as 20 times….The suit works by sensing every movement the wearer makes and almost instantly amplifies it.  Sarcos in Salt Lake City  Utah is helping the U.S. Army assess the suit’s  viability for the “soldier of tommorrow”….

(“Renee’s Aside: Does ‘faster than a locomotive’ ring a bell ?  Or is it ‘will the real “Iron Man” please stand up ?’  ” ….)

Sarcos is developing the technology under a two year contract worth up to $10 million dollars…..(Also shown above a “flying man suit” that is NOT  affilliated with the Sarcos company  in Utah)

Special Thanks: M. Jewell (AP)

Glamorous Wednesday:Good-Bye Sidney Pollack

                                        Sidney Pollack, American Movie Director

QUOTE:  “Most of the great directors that I know of were not actors, so I can’t tell you it’s a requirement.  On the other hand, it’s an enormous help” — Sidney Pollack (Academy Award Winning Director)

Renee’s Aside:  I got to “see” Mr. Sidney Pollack, in person, when I walked into his Century City office one day.  I remember that day vividly, I was wearing a “strapless black and white zebra print dress” .  Although I’ve told this story before I forgot to add that going into the Century City building I saw–I walked by–a $100,000 car.  It was an Excalibur and–it was “purple”….

                                    APPLAUSE !   APPLAUSE!

NASA Spacecraft Makes Historic Mars Landing!

The Phoenix Mars Lander whirled through space at 120,000 mph to complete its pre-progammed touch down on Mars  this past Sunday.  When the craft landed successfully on the “Red Planet” a roomful of NASA scientists  exploded with applause….NASA, has not had a successful “soft landing”  in more than three decades since the twin “Viking”  landed back in 1976….Ed Sedivy (program manager at Lockheed Martin Corp which built the “Phoenix” )described the landing  this way: “We evolve out of this cacoon an spread our wings and we turn into this beautiful butterfly on the surface”….

Launched last summer , the “Phoenix” traveled 422 million miles over the past 10 months.  The cost of this Mars mission?  Approximately $1 million dollars per mile which–comes out to exactly $422 million dollars!

MOTHER  GREECE….

             Christina Onassis 38 Carat Diamond

Dateline–London–Christie’s To Sell Onassis Jewels

The jewels of Christina Onassis, daughter of Greek ship owner Aristotle Onassis (who as we remember was married to former First Lady Jackie Kennedy) will be auctioned off in London by Christies on June 11, 2008.  The lots are expected to bring in more than 3 million pounds (thats $5.9 million U.S. dollars).  The lots are “highlighted” by a pear shaped 38 carat, D-color, flawless diamond necklace (see pictured above)….

 72.22 Carat Diamond

72.22 Carat Diamond (brings $10-13 million?)

On April 10, 2008 Sotheby’s (of Hong Kong ) auctioned what is probably one of the most expensive diamonds ever sold at auction.  It is the above flawless, D-color, pear shaped diamond which is GIA graded.  (And which is so large that it can fill a tablespoon).

Disney will distribute Renee Baker Studios’ first motion picture, in movie theatres worldwide,  under an “output deal” valued at $73.5 million dollars.
