                         The History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day (also called Saint Valentine’s Day) is a holiday celebrated on February 14th.  It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards or by gifting candy or flowers.

The Name:

The holiday is named after ‘two’ among numerous Early Christian figures named Valentine.  One being Saint Valentine of Terni.

The Romantic Association:

The holiday became associated with ‘romantic love’ in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer (during the High Middle Ages) when the tradition of  ‘courtly love’  flourished.   (Note: About Chaucer’s  ‘Love Birds’  I  give you  “Parlement of Foules”  by Geoffrey Chaucer….

“For this was seynt Volantynys Day…When every byrd comyth there to choose his mate….”

Did you know this poem was written by Chaucer to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia…By the way, She 14 years of age and he just 13 years of age).

The Greetings:  “When You Care Enough To Send The Very Best”  — Hallmark Cards (Since 1910, founded in Missouri)

In modern times the holiday has become most associated with the exchange of love notes in the form of ‘valentines’.   Such ‘valentines’ have always included the ‘heart shaped outline’  and the ‘figure of the winged cupid’.  Since the mid-nineteenth century mass produced ‘greeting cards’ surpassed handwritten notes.  The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year (behind Christmas).  The Association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines….
