A long time ago and far far away

I was sitting in my rented Hertz car one day

My white Evan-Picone jacket was parked in his lot

How was I to know I was parked in his spot?

His  GO-fers   were furious and told me to “go home”

But I did not budge I did not roam

He pulled up in his tan and coffee Rolls Royce

His smooth skin and bright teeth told me he was their boss

He walked me inside and said that his name was JEFF

I smiled, batted my lash, and said  “Dada you da best!”

While his staff moved my car from where Helen Redy did own

I sat  with Jeff Wald and pitched him my  script “Roller Drome”….

*Note:  This is how I met manager/movie producer Jeff Wald back in the late 1970′s at his office in Beverly Hills California.  At this time however–I am NOT interested in “the film business” and will instead be residing in Paris France and  working in the “fashion and beauty industry” in France. (And to work on a novel trilogy for Mr. Beck–if–he buys it).  However — If somebody else in “Hollywood” is interested–GO FOR IT!

                             “Roller Boogie 2″  ?

 So –it should be set in New York City .  But a Big  Star is needed to play the John Travolta part?   And –who will produce?  (Sorry, Renee Ashley Baker can’t produce this one  but I know that some movie producers –and movie studio heads–read this blog)….

          I, Renee Ashley Baker, have only one mother (she is pictured above). . . .

         I, Renee Ashley Baker,  am always talking about my mother—Mrs. Ashley–because she had such great style.  Even when she went to the bank –on King’s Highway in St. Louis–she looked like she stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine (and I don’t think my mother had ever,  in her life,  even  SEEN  a Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar magazine).  My mother–Mrs. Ashley–had a bank full of money and she spent it–at Stix, Baer, Fuller and Famous Barr  (in St. Louis ) and at Neusteders and Denver Dry( in Denver).  Like I’ve stated previously my mother–Mrs. Ashley– bought– paid for–two houses.   My mother’s house in St. Louis was a mini-mansion that was brought over piece by piece from France in the 1920′s.  it had four bedrooms, a fireplace and mantel in every room, and gold leaf wallpaper on the walls (like they have in the palaces of Europe).  My mother spent many hours watching her favorite soap operas  “Edge of Night” and “Secret Storm” while sitting in her white Queen’s chair  (that came from Famous Barr).

A recipe for Dad  from  The New York Times

 

 SWEETBREADS   A   LA   KING

 2 pairs sweetbreads

Water

6 tablespoons butter

12 fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 green pepper, seeded and chopped

1 canned pimento, chopped

1/2 cup sherry

1 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons flour

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon salt

4 patty shells, purchased

1. Soak the  sweetbreads in ice water forty-five minutes.  Drain and cook slowly in simmering water to cover until white, fifteen to twenty minutes.  Drain, cool in ice water and remove all covering and connective tissues.  Cut into small cubes. 

2.  Melt half the butter in a saucepan, add the mushrooms, green pepper and pimento and cook about ten minutes.  Add half the sherry and cream. 

3.  Simmer until the sauce is reduced by about half.  Add the diced sweetbreads.

  4.  In a saucepan melt the remaining butter,  add the flour and stir with a wire whisk until blended.   Meanwhile, bring the milk to a boil and add all at once to the butter-flour mixture, stirring vigorously with the whisk.  Add to the sweet-bread mixture and season with salt. 

 5.  Add the remaining cream and sherry just before pouring the mixture into the heated patty shells. 

Yield:  4 Servings

Recipes–Wednesday–(From The New York Times) 

1.  CRAB AND ARTICHOKE CANAPES

1/2 cup Russian dressing 

 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard 

1 six-ounce can crabmeat, pick over well 

 1 ten-ounce can artichoke bottoms, drained

2 tablespoons chopped parsley

  Lemon wedges 

 1.  Combine the Russian dressing and mustard and fold in the crabmeat, mixing lightly but thoroughly. 

 2.  Pile the mixture on the artichoke bottoms.  Just before serving, brown the canapes in a preheated broiler and sprinkle with chopped parsley.  Garnish with lemon wedges and serve immediately. 

 Yield:  8 to 12 canapes

 

2.   CANAPES  A LA SIMON  

  1.  Cut small rounds of thinkly sliced bread with a biscuit cutter and toast in broiler. 

2.  In a skillet, cook six or seven slices bacon until soft, chop and mix with one cup Major Grey’s chutney. 

3.  Spread the mixture ont he toast rounds and broil in a preheated broiler about five inches from the source of heat until a slight crust is formed on top and the canapes are heated through.

Yield:  About 2 dozen canapes

 

 3.  SHERRIED  SHRIMP

24 medium shrimp, shelled and deveined

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup sherry

1/4 cup salad oil

1 teaspoon powdered giner, or 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root, ground

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

1.  Marinate the raw shrimp in the remaining ingredients one hour or less. 

2.  Place the shrimp with a little of the marinade in a skillet and cook three or four minutes, until the shrimp are done.  If possible, use an electric skillet. 

Yield:  4 servings

 4.  RENEE ASHLEY BAKER’S TIPS FOR SERVING COLD DRINKS:

          a.  Freeze ice cubes containing:  Olives, cocktail onions and twists of lemon. 

          b.   When mixing drinks just pop one of these ice cubes into the glass
