                         The History of Valentine’s Day

        Valentine’s Day (also called Saint Valentine’s Day) is a holiday celebrated on February 14th.  It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards or by gifting candy or flowers.

The Name: 

      The holiday is named after ‘two’ among numerous Early Christian figures named Valentine.  One being Saint Valentine of Terni.

The Romantic Association:

     The holiday became associated with ‘romantic love’ in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer (during the High Middle Ages) when the tradition of  ‘courtly love’  flourished.   (Note: About Chaucer’s  ‘Love Birds’  I  give you  ”Parlement of Foules”  by Geoffrey Chaucer….

            “For this was seynt Volantynys Day…When every byrd comyth there to choose his mate….”
